The Land of Nod refers to the place to which Cain was banned after murdering his brother Abel. A land far from Eden, governed by aimlessness. FC Bergman was inspired by the majestic Rubens Gallery of Antwerp’s Royal Museum of Fine Arts for this performance.
The Rubens Gallery is the museum’s pride and joy, showcasing fifteen of the most impressive paintings Peter Paul Rubens ever painted. Visitors are confronted with these works, finding themselves in a vacuum, in a place that seems to escape the grasp of time.
Currently the Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp is closed to the public for renovation. All the works have been removed from the museum and the museum galleries have been stripped of their splendour and magnificence. It has become a no-man’s land, it’s as if the building is at war with the outside world.
FC Bergman decided to create a wordless performance about the history of the Rubens Gallery, its works and above all about man who seeks consolation and shelter in the museum. The Rubens Gallery is reconstructed true to size in an empty hall. The structure resembles a large ark. The audience becomes part of the set, sheltered from all the dangers of the outside world. The Rubens Gallery resembles a refuge, where people can catch their breath and recover from the world beyond its walls.
FC Bergman consists of six actors/theatre makers/artists. They have developed their own dramatic language since 2006, which in addition to being anarchistic and slightly chaotic above all is extremely visual and poetic. Their performances often highlight the existence of mankind and its struggles and ambitions.
