The tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen and his Baroque ensemble A nocte temporis selected the most beautiful arias and instrumental music from the operas of Lully and his peers. The haute-contre is the main theme in this concert.
The haute-contre is a rare type of high tenor voice, not to be confused with the countertenor. In seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France, these voices often sang the lead roles in the opera.
One day the composer Jean-Baptiste Lully heard Louis Gaulard Dumesny, who worked as a cook, sing and was immediately taken with his voice. Dumesny first performed on the stage in 1677, after which he was given all the lead roles in Lully’s operas. He was an excellent actor, with a powerful voice. Most remarkably, he never learnt to read scores and had to memorise everything.
Reinoud Van Mechelen is also capable of weaving unique stories. De Standaard newspaper wrote: “His clear, high but never strident tenor has contributed to his recent rapid rise in the world of Baroque music.” To be continued!
Performers: Reinoud Van Mechelen, haute-contre and artistic direction.
