An ambitious undertaking. That is the least you can say about this six-part story about the birth of Christ. Johann Sebastian Bach leads the soloists, the choir and the orchestra in an exultant composition which celebrates this joyous event and rings in the Christmas season with festive and jubilant music.
After the rousing moments, the tone becomes more low-key, switching to deep emotion or humility in the recitatives, arias or choruses. When Bach decided to compose a major oratorio for the Christmas season in 1734-1735, he was inspired by his own majestic passions rather than the (relatively limited) tradition of specific Christmas compositions. As a consequence, he returned to the typical elements of his passions for this Christmas Oratorio. Three textual layers – the Biblical story, the Lutheran choruses and newly composed texts – are combined with an unrivalled variation of musical forms.
AMUZ treats you to a performance of the full Weihnachtsoratorium, with all six cantatas, which is quite exceptional. Outstanding music, with world-class soloists, an astonishingly accurate and deeply emotional performance by il Gardellino conducted by Peter Van Heyghen: an unforgettable Christmas gift for yourself!
