Earth Diver is an initiative of the director Wouter Van Looy. A breath-taking and powerful multimedia portrait of a society in crisis, which faces its own decline while grasping for answers.
ChorWerk Ruhr performs religious work by Heinrich Schütz, casting their eyes up at heaven and God, who brings hope and redemption. Music composed at a time when the plague and war created death and destruction. Then suddenly, the music of Nikolaus Brass resonates, who searches, asks, makes Schütz’s religious house of cards teeter dangerously.
The choir moves among an imposing video set in which the video artist Wim Catrysse paints a seemingly fictional portrait of an icy place, after a calamity. A commune of miners who decided to pick up again, delving ever deeper, to the core of our earth, against their better judgement.
The performer and singer Phil Mintor reads an emotional poem about loss and detachment at the centre of the video set. A text by Paul Verrept, which was inspired by Kübler-Ross’s stages of grief. He takes us on a journey from denial to anger, from our negotiation with life to lethargy and depressions. Where will we find the answers? What does God have to say or does science suggest a better alternative? Who helps us accept that everything is finite?
