L’Orfeo tells the story of Orpheus who loses his beloved bride Eurydice. Overcome by endless sorrow, the musician makes his way into the underworld to reclaim his wife.
Just one moment’s hesitation. That was all it took for Orpheus to relinquish his beloved wife to the realm of Hades. Orpheus vacillates between love and loss, hope and defeat, as illustrated here by Monteverdi in a powerful and emotional dialogue between the orchestra and the soloists.
Monteverdi’s ‘favola in musica’ or musical fable L‘Orfeo has five acts, combining solos and madrigals with a large musical ensemble, and is considered the root of all opera. The libretto serves as a guideline for the musical composition, but the harmonies, rhythms and instrumentation also contribute to the L’Orfeo’s intense expression and rich sonority. Monteverdi rightfully occupies his place in the gallery of prominent artists and scientists of his time, which includes Galileo, Shakespeare, Caravaggio, Rubens, Titian and Tintoretto.
This concert by I Fagiolini is the breath-taking note on which Laus Polyphoniae 2018 will end. Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo continues to be an experience, even after 411 years.
