Between the University area and the historical centre of Antwerp, you can have dinner the real Italian way: relaxed, enjoying a warm Italian welcome and their delicious food. On the menu there are other South Italian dishes as well, but you’d better taste their pizza, because probably – and when it comes to Antwerp, without any doubt – you have never tasted something like it before…
Thanks to the beautiful wood oven at La Tarantella and the ingredients they use, which both come over all the way from Naples – and, trust me, Italian tomatoes for example are not to be compared with Belgian -, their pizza is exceptionally tasteful. The dough is perfectly – crispy – baked and the mozzarella di bufala on top off it is still blazing when the pizza is served at your table. The used vegetables are perfectly grilled and their prosciutto has a stunning taste. Brief: this is pizza’s haute cuisine. And to eat it the way real Italians do, you should definitely order some beer with it.
La Tarantella is located in a beautiful house filled with a typical but tastefully simple Italian atmosphere, and is owned by a young Italian couple, Valerio and Nina. Since Valerio was born to a Neapolitan family of pizza bakers, he didn’t renounce his roots. He recently even won the second price at the Benelux pizzaiolo championship, and, in fact, it’s like watching a spectacle seeing your own pizza be prepared by Valerio. Because his girlfriend was moving to Antwerp to continue her studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, he decided to follow her and opened his own restaurant in the same area, which at the end wasn’t a bad idea at all.. the restaurant – which is very spacious – is almost every evening amply filled with people. Antwerp is clearly fond of them. So try this place and I’m sure you will be too.
Buon appetito!
