Last weekend (23rd and 24th of March) De Invasie took place in Antwerp. About 70 designers or "warriors" were asked to participate and present their work at the old museum at the Suikerrui. More than 10.000 people visited the event. So we thought it would be nice to talk with a few people who showed their work. Margerita Sanders (28) is one of those people, living in Antwerp (or coming back at least) and works as a costume designer. In her spare time she designs animal handbags so we thought it was time to get to know the person behind the (beautiful yet a tad creepy) bags.
I’m 28, live in Mechelen (she recently moved back home but is planning on coming back to Antwerp as soon as possible), design animal shaped handbags and I’m 1/6th of Antwerp based collective .
The first one i made is about 7 years ago, it was a dog; I partially glued it together and hand drew the guts on the lining. Over the years I steadily worked out better and new patterns and finishings, ‘till about 3 years ago, I was happy with the results. But the initial concept, creating animals out of animals, started with that dog.
I primarily design and make costumes. I work a lot for and Jonas Govaerts. And a couple of personal ones, most yet to be finished, ranging from drawings to 3d objects and sometimes clothing.
My personal work always stems from small obsessions, trying to figure something out or make sense out of it, as is normal, I suppose. Different obsessions or interests seem to overlap and influence each other over time. My main inspirations I find in science (fiction) and in people, pretty much anyone who understands or possesses the urge to create something.
I knew about De Invasie for a couple of years but never dared to send in my work, so when they contacted me last year to send in my work for De Invasie Kortrijk, I was really happy and even more so when I got selected. They offer an incredible stepping stone for young designers and the time and effort they put in everything from the event itself to the promotion to making sure nobody freezes to death, etc. is positively insane.
Yes, my neighbour at De Invasie who showed his graduation project, objects, a book, and prints inspired by imagination. , who has a beautiful hand dyed, symmetrical collection and , interior design objects and an incredibly intricate jewelry collection
Hopefully finished with a couple of lingering projects...
