Any Given Sunday
Our grandparents know it as a day for prayer and contemplation, our younger selves as “hangover day”, but recently Sunday's have been moving out of Saturday's shadow as a prime party day.
Sunday events are popping up like mushrooms. After , , , and many more, one of Antwerp's hottest party concepts, , also hopped on the Sunday train. “Kamp Noord” is their first open air event in Rivierenhof, a huge park only a 10 minute bicycle ride away from the city center. So I went to absorb the laid back atmosphere.
Laid back is the right definition of the party when I arrive around 6pm. About 200 people are hanging out and sitting in the grass, enjoying one of the last sunny summer days of 2014. A handful of people are dancing to Rick Shiver's music, some deep bassy house grooves. I grab a beer, say hello to the usual suspects and put myself in the grass, on a small slope overviewing the “playground” to take some pictures.
Some beers later I follow 2 friends to the “dance floor” that is becoming more crowded by the minute. The beat is moving uptempo and everyone seems in a very joyful mood. More people arrive and it doesn't take long for the event to evolve into a proper Noord Feesje (proper Antwerp for North Party) as we know it: everybody's smiling, cheering and dancing.
I chat for a little while with Bert, the main organizer. He started with Noord Feesjes a couple of years ago as an alternative for the main party circuit. An open air party was the last thing on their bucket list. As the music stops at 11 pm, most guests will agree this shouldn't be the last edition.
Hopefully to be continued...
