It’s that time of the year again when people participate in the 40 Days Without Meat campaign! No, I’m not talking about the Christian before Easter Fast thing, but the environmental food concept that was launched six years ago.  During this period, people are encouraged to eat veggie and to help you succeed, where you can track your progress, get recipes and even step up your game by participating in extra challenges.

This year, a new concept will be added to the whole experience. Whereas the last 6 years, the experience was something shared with online likeminded people and some restaurants here and there, this year they wanted to take the computer out of the equation. Well not entirely because every piece of information can still be found on their website and Facebook page, but the kick-off will be a bit different. This year, the kick-off (which is this weekend) starts with an extraordinary food festival – Dagen Zonder Vlees Tafelt – in Felix Pakhuis. At the food festival you’ll have the opportunity to see real chefs use innovative vegetarian recipes but also taste dishes from famous participants and even try preparing a recipe here and there yourself.

It’s going to be something spectacular since the Antwerp based event company, Stalker, is co-hosting this event. They have done some amazing things in the past with the Mechelseplein feesten and the notorious leave us at dawn parties, so I can’t wait to see how they have translated this concept into an event. I do know however that their opening party, Fruitloose is going to be a bunch of vegetarians going footloose with true Kevin Bacon (or rather Kevin Tofu) moves. We will be dancing to 70s, 80s and 90s hits till the early hours to the gluten free beats of Dj Deloin, snacking exotic food from foodtruck Alma Libre and as a cherry on the cake (or in the cocktail in this case) we will be able to taste the mind-blowing cocktail mixtures of Thomas Van de Weyer who was the former bartender at the “Upper Room Bar” in The Jane.

So don’t be a medium rare and be there!

We'll be raisin up the jam & turnip the beets approved by locals.
