BOOM!

Another great new concept in the city I love. Meet Stéphanie Spens & Katrien Ronsse, owners of pop up bar (meaning ‘little house’ or ‘atelier’). I was lucky to join them at their opening night last Friday and it was a blast! DJs on duty were Farid, Benni Booi & Deegee Prinsez, Deloin and Boatman. Good vibes & very nice music. Thanks guys!

Inspirational setting

“The idea of STULP started a few months ago. As a stylist, my job is featured by lively periods, as well as by quiet ones. In the meantime, I combined styling with a job in the catering industry. But I don’t really like sitting back, waiting around for opportunities to present itself. So I thought ‘ why not start my own business ?’”, says Stéphanie. “What’s missing in Antwerp, is a platform for young, creative entrepreneurs. I wanted to provide them in an inspirational setting where they can gather and create things. I called Katrien, a friend who also works in the catering industry. She was really excited and decided to join me.” STULP was born.

STULP is open to everyone, but with a particular focus on 20-30iers like the owners themselves. “At that age you have to start thinking about your future, start doing things, grow up and find a job. We want to help young adults in their journey.”

Old customs building & up-cycling

After some misfortunes concerning finding the right location, they caught sight of a former abandoned customs building along the river Scheldt. For tonights event they put tents outside the building with fire pits. Very cozy! The building isn’t that big, but because of its set-up –a hallway with two smaller rooms, on one side the bar, on the other side a dance room –it’s very unique.

Although most furniture was stored to prevent damage and enlarge the disposable space, the interview taught me all furniture was made of abandoned materials and products. These up-cycling projects are a central aim in STULP’s concept, not only in the interior but also in the planned workshops. “People throw away stuff way to easy! We have to denote and sensitize them that they can reuse or recycle old, in their eyes ‘useless’ things. These can serve another purpose, with just a simple adjustment.

One way we stimulate that via our interior. It was a long but fun journey with friends and family to find and labour everything. Another way is our up-cycling cupboard, in which we present a lot of used materials and products like old vinyl or CDs. People can labour them for free during a visit to STULP. They can take the creation with them or we use it in our interior, as they want. We want to inspire people. Be creative!”.

Local

The idea of supporting young local crafters is extended in their food & drinks. STULP serves a range of local drinks. At the opening, the first hundred attendants received a free De Koninck, a well-known Antwerp beer. Every Sunday, brunch is served, as well as products of Emma Van Hoof, another young Antwerp entrepreneur they want to put in the spotlights.

The opening party was promising. And there’s more to come! Performances of Felix Pallas and North , a knit and wine night, exhibitions, Japanese movie nights and many more. Check out their website! Wanna host a workshop, perform or just be in their program with another creative idea? Stéphanie & Katrien would love to make room for your idea.

I’m a big fan! Are you?
