Since July you can take the free ferry for the crossing between the left bank and the right bank, which is a fun alternative to the pedestrian tunnel, which will be renovated soon.
A free ferry now connects the left and right bank of the River Scheldt. And a ferry is the perfect solution to cross the river as renovation work will soon start on St. Anna Tunnel, or the pedestrian tunnel as it is colloquially known. The ferry sails from the jetty at Frederik Van Eedenplein to the pontoon near Steen Castle. The works on the pedestrian tunnel should be completed by the spring of 2019. Until then, people can continue to use the free ferry service.
Pedestrians, cyclists (no motorbikes) and wheelchair users (with assistants) can all take the ferry, which runs seven days a week. On weekdays, it sails from 7.15 a.m. until 6.45 p.m. There is a 30-minute window from 1 p.m. until 1.30 p.m. during which the ferry does not sail. On weekends and public holidays, the ferry sails from 10.15 a.m. until 9.45 p.m. with a 30-minute break from 1 p.m. until 1.30 p.m.
