Be sure to look up if you are on De Keyserlei, near the Antwerp Tower, between 7 and 14 September 2017. ‘Happy Birthday Dear Gordon’ is a work of art on the building's façade. It honours Gordon Matta-Clark, who realised a similar piece on a building along the quays 40 years ago.
The striking Antwerp Tower will attract even more attention from 7 to 14 September. Gert Adriaenssens, a Belgian artist, will pay tribute to Gordon Matta-Clark on the façade of this building. The deceased artist created ‘Office Baroque’, a similar work of art on the façade of a building along the quays, 40 years ago. With this work of art, Adriaenssens demonstrates that art and urban development can go hand in hand.
Gordon Matta-Clark (1943–1978), son of the Chilean Surrealist painter Robert Matta, is a legend amongst artists and architects. At the end of the 1960s, he was one of the central figures in the artistic colonisation of the New York neighbourhood SoHo, the erstwhile centre of the international art world. His work was a critique of the conventions within architecture and the visual arts, and it drew attention to social and urban development problems.
Those who are curious about the work of Gordon Matta-Clark can also explore the permanent collection of the M HKA. The anniversary of Office Baroque will be commemorated here on Thursday, 7 September with a screening of the film Welcome Back, Gordon Matta-Clark by the Japanese artist Yuki Okumura (b. 1978).
Happy Birthday Gordon!, a homage to Gordon Matta-Clark by artist Gert Adriaenssens and neighbourhood developer Matexi.
