The recently renovated Elisabeth Center Antwerp (formerly the Queen Elisabeth Hall) is a well-known events venue in Antwerp. Offering superior acoustics, the centre was recently shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival Awards in Berlin. The Elisabeth Centre’s programme is very varied, including modern and classical concerts. The place to be for music lovers.
The Queen Elisabeth Hall or Elisabeth Center Antwerp as it is called today has a rich history. It was founded by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp, an association for zoology and nature conservation, along with an orchestra in residence called deFilharmonie. In 1895, the society’s board decided to organise concerts in Antwerp’s Zoo, heralding the construction of the current concert hall. There has always been a festival hall in this location (since 1897) but the actual concert hall or Queen Elisabeth Hall was only inaugurated in 1960. The building was recently renovated from top to bottom and reopened to the public at the end of 2016.
The renovated Elisabeth Center Antwerp has a shoe box design and rests on 500 piles. The former building’s façade is the only element that was retained. The new shape allows the sound to resonate perfectly, meaning the concert hall is suited for a wide range of genres and events, including classical concerts, musicals, theatre shows and conventions. The new venue offers something for everyone. The Elisabeth Center Antwerp is also the new home of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, formerly deFilharmonie. What’s more, the brand-new concert hall can seat just over 2,000 spectators. The centre is conveniently located next to so you can combine a day trip to the zoo with a concert in this magnificent hall. Interested in a concert in this amazing venue?
