Sacrilege | Jeremy Deller

Visit ‘Sanguine/Bloedrood’ for free on Saturday in the M HKA. This exhibition of international masterpieces was curated by one of our greatest living artists, Luc Tuymans. The Middelheim Museum, meanwhile, invites everyone to the opening of its new summer exhibition in the park, called ‘Experience Traps’. A modern Baroque festival with (interactive) performances, food trucks and DJs.

Rubens House

Antwerp Baroque 2018 pays tribute to Peter Paul Rubens, making the the perfect place to start your Baroque immersion. The museum is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. (pay to enter). Ensemble Clematis will perform ‘Alla Mantovana’ at 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the large workshop. This is free for all visitors of the Rubens House after online reservation.

The MAS’s guest is the leading lady of the Baroque. shot to fame at a time when women artists were very rare.

In addition to Michaelina, the young Antwerp photographer and artist will have his first solo exhibition in the MAS.

‘Michaelina’ and ‘Feast’ open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. (pay to enter). Public opening festival in the boulevard:

  • Workshop for families in the boulevard
  • MASafari, a family game, search for clues in ‘Feast’
  • A family booklet about ‘Michaelina’
  • Organ programme from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the ‘Feast’ exhibition | organ from the MAS’s collection
  • Speed tours of ‘Michaelina’ and ‘Feast’ every hour | 30 minutes
  • Baroque concert in the margin of ‘Michaelina’ by the lute player Floris De Rycker with the soprano Kristien Nijs

Middelheim Museum

has plenty of surprises in store for you, with creations by Belgian and international artists who were all inspired by the Baroque.

Experience Traps is open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. (free). Opening festival:

  • Jeremy Deller’s ‘Sacrilege’; have fun on this gigantic bouncy castle and artwork, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.
  • From 2 p.m. performance Gelitin | tours by museum guides for adults, every half hour, 90 minutes (Dutch and English) and for families with children of 6 years and older, every hour, 90 minutes (Dutch)
  • Food trucks and DJs from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m.
  • Party with DJs from 9 p.m.

M HKA

Baroque masters engage in a confrontation with leading contemporary artists in the exhibition ‘ ’, open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. (free).

Opening festival:

  • Walk & talk and family tours with museum guides Sanguine | Bloedrood exhibition at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. 5 p.m.
  • Concert Liam Byrne at 2 p.m. in the reading room
  • House of Music: playful music sessions for parents with babies or toddlers:
    • from 0 to 18 months, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. (registration required, max. 12 children)
    • from 18 months to 3 years, from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. (registration required, max. 12 children)

Monumental churches

The five monumental churches are open to the public:

  • Cathedral of Our Lady (pay to enter) from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Cathedral is mainly known for its paintings by Rubens, such as ‘The Raising of The Cross’ and ‘The Descent from the Cross’
  • St Charles Borromeo (free) from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Rubens contributed to the design of the tower, the façade, the high altar, the stucco on the ceiling, the Chapel of the Virgin, as a painter, decorator and architect. You can also see his painting ‘The Return from Egypt’ there.
  • St. Paul’s Church (free) from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. A Baroque gem in a Gothic shrine with stunning Baroque altars and works by such artists as Rubens, Jordaens and Van Dyck
  • St. James’s Church (pay to enter) from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. This late-Gothic gem has a lavish Baroque interior, with 23 altars, with marble everywhere. The church also has a phenomenal art collection. You can also see Rubens’s tomb is here
  • St. Andrew’s Church (free) from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Rubens’s first parish church, where you can also see a work by his teacher Otto van Veen.

Baroque in the city

Walks:

  • (8 euros in pre-sale) at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. | a themed walk on Antwerp Baroque art and the Baroque lifestyle
  • , visit three churches to discover traces of Rubens’s life in the city. You can choose from two walks: Rubens’s rise (10 euros in pre-sale) and Rubens’s prosperity (10 euros in pre-sale)

Fashion Academy:

  • SHOW2018: the first-year students will present their Baroque-inspired costume, as part of the ‘Historical costumes’ assignment during the annual fashion show (37 euros seating, 15 euros standing) | Parkloods.
  • EXPO2018 of the work of the Masters in fashion. They will also show Baroque-inspired costumes here from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. (10 euros, students 5 euros) | Coquilhatstraat
