The Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA) is a leading museum of contemporary visual arts, film and sculptures. It recently reopend after an impressive renovation in collaboration with Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt and Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki. Since its recent makeover, the M HKA now also boasts a free permanent basic collection. Here, you will discover works of contemporary heroes, historical pioneers and tasters from the museum’s worldwide collection. On the ground floor, you can admire avant-garde art ranging from Panamarenko to Luc Tuymans and from Dan Flavin to Jimmie Durham. Moreover, permanent collections are displayed elsewhere in the museum.
In 1987, the museum was housed in a converted grain store/warehouse. The M HKA focuses on art from 1970 to now, spread over 4,000m². The M HKA is artistically always in motion; Artists of various ilk are regular visitors to match their vision and talent to the existing artworks there. In addition to changing collection presentations and four major projects per year, the M HKA also brings a varied programme of performances, lectures, concerts, debates, walking presentations, museum chats and museum breakfasts.
In addition to a new permanent collection, the look and feel of the museum has been completely updated. For example, there is a multilingual reception infrastructure tailored to a wide and varied audience. The unique entrance, with a library/reading room as a first visit experience, is at the heart of the museum.
